Facts about identity theft

According to September 2003’s “Federal Trade Commission—Identity Theft Survey” published by the FTC (the government’s consumer protection agency), 9.9 million Americans were the victims of identity theft last year, costing businesses, financial institutions and individual consumers $53 billion.

Safety tip

Use a locking mailbox that allows postal carriers to deliver your mail through a slot, but that requires unlocking before mail can be removed.  The FTC report reveals that nearly 25% of all identity theft victims said thieves obtained their information through lost or stolen credit cards, checkbooks, social security cards or stolen mail.  Thieves troll neighborhoods during the day after the mail has been delivered, and just by stealing a credit card bill, they have access to your name, billing address and credit card number.  Stealing a medical or insurance statement could reveal your social security number.

Identity theft affects more than your credit card accounts

Identity theft is not just used by perpetrators to open new credit accounts.  If your identity is stolen, people can use your personal information to identity themselves when they’re charged with a crime, when renting an apartment, or when obtaining medical care—so you might not find out that your identity has been stolen just by checking with credit bureaus.
