Facts about child care providers

Studies show that the presence of consistent, well-trained and well-compensated caregivers is essential for children to thrive in child care. However, according to the National Center for the Early Childhood Work Force, approximately 40% of center-based staff and 50% of home-based caregivers leave their jobs each year. Providers that retain a greater percentage of highly-skilled staff are significantly more likely to receive higher ratings for quality of care.

Safety tip

Staff retention is just one consideration when choosing the right provider for your family. "A Parents Guide to Choosing Safe and Healthy Child Care" lists 13 health and safety guidelines that have been identified as key to quality child care. The guidelines are provided in a questionnaire format that serves as a useful tool for both those who are looking for new service and those checking on their existing provider. The guide is available on the National Resource Center for Health and Safety in Child Care web site.

Accreditation is a start

Accredited care providers have volunteered to go beyond minimum licensing requirements to meet national standards of quality care established by national child care organizations. The following accrediting organizations offer searchable lists of providers on their sites:

Early childhood programs and pre-schools: National Association for the Education of Young Children
After-school programs: National School-Age Care Alliance
Family child care: National Association for Family Child Care
